International Summer School

Every summer since 2004, ECAM has proposed an International Summer School program in Science and Engineering. It is open to foreign students who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree at one of our partner universities.

What is the International Summer School ?

The Summer School is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a truly international experience in a French Graduate School of Engineering, to learn or to improve French language skills while at the same time developing your knowledge in a scientific field.

It is organised in collaboration with the three other schools of the IPL group (Institut Polytechnique de Lyon). The programme takes place in June/July for 5 weeks.

Jeremy, North Carolina State University, USA.

“Our projects were informative and tailored to our interests while the advising professors were very understanding and helpful”.

The students follow a course specifically prepared for their needs, combining French as a foreign language (36 hrs), scientific conferences/practical work in English (40 hrs) in the specialities of the IPL Schools. In addition, there are cultural visits and tours of companies and factories during the programme.

The seven previous sessions have brought together approximately 190 students from different foreign universities and have given them the opportunity to discover France, Lyon and ECAM.

Who is it for ?

It is designed for undergraduate students in science and engineering who have completed their first or second year of study in a foreign university and who expect to major in one of the disciplines of the four IPL engineering schools.

What scientific courses are offered?

At ECAM participants will work on the topic of “Conversion of Energy”: solar cell, fuel cell energy,

Kerry, University of Pittsburgh, USA.

“Between the helpful staff and amazing international students, I know I will look back to this summer as one of the best I’ve ever had”.

wind energy, nuclear reactor PWR, electrical grid, electrical to mechanical and reverse by electric motors. Around 40 hours of short conferences and practical courses in English will be offered in this field of study. Case studies and personal work.

Do I need to speak French ?

No, but you must be fluent in English. Scienfitic classes will be given in English. All students take either beginner or intermediate level French language classes during the program.

Where will the programme take place and where will I stay ?

The engineering course will take place at ECAM. French language classes will take place at CPE Lyon on the Lyon scientific campus.

Students will be accommodated in a residence hall close to CPE Lyon.

How much does it cost ?

1,700 euros including all classes, 5-week accommodation in the residence hall, all visits and social events.

The cost of meals and local transport is not included by students who will have access to the dining halls with meal plans.

When and how should I register ?

To apply, you only have to complete the application form to be downloaded from the dedicated web site (see below) and to return it to the local coordinator of your home institution (partner universities) or directly to ECAM.

The deadline for the 2012 Summer School program is March 15, 2012

Catherine Julson from the University of Tennesse participated in the 2011 Summer School program in Lyon.

 Summer School 2011

"I would highly recommend studying at ECAM to anyone because I absolutely loved my experience. The labs we got to do really helped me understand the material and my professors were extremely good at explaining things in a way that I could understand. The staff and professors really made the experience for me. They were friendly and took interest in getting to know us personally. The students at the school were also welcoming and eager to get to know us.

There is so much to do in Lyon, but it is not so huge that it is overwhelming. There are lots of restaurant districts where the food is absolutely delicious. I loved my experience so much I am thinking about moving to Lyon after getting my bachelor’s from the University of TN and getting my master’s at ECAM."
