Every year brings something new. The 11th edition of ECAM Lyon’s Fest’Innov innovation challenge focused on sustainable development and offered a host of fresh ideas to the 350 participants, students and companies.
Cross-breeding of skills
Some 300 students, divided into groups, had 24 hours to find the most innovative, realistic and ingenious solution to a real problem raised by a company. For this edition, the teams included a mix of students with diverse backgrounds and profiles:
- 4th– and 5th-year students in the ECAM Arts et Métiers general engineering program
- 5th-year students in the Energy and Industrial & Mechanical Engineering specialty programs
- 3rd-year Product Design students from the Condé School
- Design students from Martinière Diderot – DSAA
- Innovation Management students from IAE Lyon
This rich diversity of profiles helped participants to think about their problems and find solutions by taking into account all aspects of the innovation topics to be solved as part of the challenge.
“Everyone quickly found their place on the team. As a design student, I have the feeling I can bring methods on how to find and project new ideas. It’s really interesting to take part in this type of challenge and to work alongside people with very different backgrounds.” – Hélène, Product Design student, Martinière Diderot
New companies contributing subjects
This year, the Fest’Innov challenge led students to compete based on topics proposed by 27 companies.
Some of these companies are faithful every year, regularly taking part in the challenge to call upon the students’ fresh minds. These firms include Alstom, CNR, Colas, EFI Automotive, Framatome, GRDF, JTEKT, Manitowoc, Montabert, Plastic Omnium, Segula, Somfy and Volvo.
As well, this year’s edition of Fest’Innov saw a handful of new companies taking part, including Astek, Atlantic, Biomérieux, Elkem, Germitec, In&Motion, Kickmaker, Lennox, Nestle Spécial T, Nexans, Spie Facilities, Stäubli, Urgo and Uwinloc.
“Fest’Innov is just outstanding! Everybody is moving around, the students are motivated, there is a genuine energy. You meet a lot of companies. It is really interesting.” – A participant from Uwinloc.
“We take part in Fest’Innov to challenge ourselves, to get outside the typical industrial setting and meet new innovators who think differently. From the very beginning, the students ask questions that enable new doors to be opened, to take a different stance regarding the issue we need to tackle. Mixing perspectives and experiences is what makes this event so rich.” – Joséphine Munisch, Elkem.
A commitment to sustainable development
Through Fest’Innov, ECAM Lyon is pursuing its commitment to sustainable development. Printed documents have namely been replaced by the use of a dedicated app. In addition to being good for the planet, this application enabled greater interactivity between the various participants and better distribution of information during the challenge.
As proof that taking care of the environment is everyone’s responsibility, many participating companies chose innovation topics related to sustainable development. These included solutions to reduce the environmental impact of dust on construction sites, plant-based solar protection, a solution to filter pollutants in aquatic environments, and many others.
And the winners are…
After 24 hours of creativity, benchmarking and liters of coffee, the panel of experts designated the teams that stood out thanks to their ideas, their teamwork and spirit, their presentation video and the technical feasibility of their solution.
The big winners at Fest’Innov #11 are:
